Adam GOPNIK: “France and America in the Obama Era”

When
Wednesday January 21, 2008 at 7:00 P.M.

Where
Brasserie Cognac, 1740 Broadway (at 55th Street), New York, 10019.

Who
Adam Gopnik is best known as a staff writer for The New Yorker—to which he has contributed non-fiction, fiction, memoir and criticism—and as the author of the essay collection Paris to the Moon, an account of the half-decade Gopnik, wife Martha, and son Luke spent in the capital of France.

Adam Gopnik

This award-winning journalist speaks with singular wit, eloquence and insight on modern life and culture. He has a rich trove of delightful stories and revealing observations about people and places and everyday life.

Adam writes what he calls "comic-personal essays", funny and touching stories about how families live (especially his own family) in the storied cities of Paris and New York. In these talks, as in his books, Adam has a marvelous talent for opening the heart and showing us who we are, with a touch that is light and a wisdom that is deep.

Adam also writes long essays on big thinkers for The New Yorker and he has a genius for bringing these people and their ideas to life in these presentations, for communicating the emotions behind ideas, the feelings that ideas evoke in us, and their relevance to modern life.
Adam's next book, Angels & Ages, looks at the birth of the modern era through the lives of two people who helped shape it and certainly exemplified it—Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin.

His previous book, Through the Children's Gate, is a meditation on hope, as his family, his city and country live through and past the events of 9/ll.

The discussion will be led by Eric Schine, Senior Editor of Inc. Magazine and Emmanuel Saint Martin, correspondent for France 24 and for the french magazine Le Point.
